Set in a park with centuries-old trees and partially enclosed by walls, this 17th-century castle, built around 1620 for a family of Rouen parliamentarians, is renowned for its architectural significance. Located between a semicircular rotunda that closes an English-style park on the village side and a vast open perspective on the countryside, it is considered one of the most beautiful and interesting Louis XIII castles in Normandy. Its integrity, architectural quality, and exceptional Philibert Delorme-style framework contributed to its full classification in 2018. The castle now requires a complete restoration, with the exception of a large staircase featuring an 18th-century wrought iron banister and sumptuous vaulted cellars.

Architecture and Features

The castle features a central body flanked by two projecting pavilions. Its Norman Louis XIII architecture, characterized by brick and stone, is richly decorated with polychrome brick trellises, limestone sculptures on door frames, windows, and cornices, and a basement with flint and limestone checkerboards. The roof, curved like a boat hull, hints at the original "à la Philibert Delorme" framework—a very airy structure formed of 30 rafters creating a truss.

In the basement, the superb vaulted cellars exhibit an aesthetic and clever interplay of brick and stone colors. The space includes several kitchens, cellars, various rooms, and an extraordinary 100-meter-deep well (which takes 6 seconds for a stone to fall). The well is equipped with an impressive water-raising mechanism.

The interior is stripped of all decorations, except for the beautiful 18th-century staircase with a wrought iron banister that serves three levels up to the attic. The property also includes several outbuildings in poor condition, a cart shed with a series of beautiful wooden arches, and two access points: one via a pair of pillars and a 19th-century gate. The driveway is approximately 470 meters long.

The chateau is situated in a 6.5-hectare park.
