Manors of Brittany: Château du Val-Bouan

Château du Val-Bouan, a Breton manor house located in the coastal region of the Côtes-d'Armor department, lies north of the municipality of Planguenoual. Its present appearance is the result of extensive restoration in 1893, which incorporated an older wing from the 17th century. The main building, equipped with two different towers on its courtyard and park sides respectively, exhibits a slight asymmetry between its front and rear. The square tower with a staircase at the front serves as the main entrance.

Architect Jules Morvan from Saint Brieuc, primarily known for his work in church design and architecture, created this rare example of neogothic forms in Brittany. Like many other houses in the region, the Château du Val-Bouan was mainly constructed using typical Breton materials such as granite and rubble stone. Following a widespread fire in the 1980s, it underwent extensive restoration. The interiors were lovingly restored: intricate paneling, magnificent fireplaces, adorned crests, and elegant pointed arches, reflecting stylistic influences from both Gothic and Renaissance periods.

Adjacent to and in front of the manor house are agricultural outbuildings, built starting in the 19th century and subsequently expanded multiple times until the beginning of the 21st century. Together with the park, which stretches almost to the coast, the estate serves as a fine example of a Breton domain that remains preserved as a cohesive unit to this day.

Today, Château du Val-Bouan, located at Le Val, 22400, France, is meticulously maintained and operates as a stylish hotel with a spa facility.
