Castles in Brittany: Château de Nantois
Château de Nantois, Pléneuf-Val-André
Château de Nantois is a remarkable country estate located east of the town of Pléneuf-Val-André in Brittany, which has undergone two construction phases. The initial design dates back to the second half of the 17th century. During the second phase in the 19th century, the manor with the its central staircase tower was only minimally altered , thus preserving the original Renaissance character of the facade seen today.
While the manor constructed of rubble stone with a slate roof, is characteristic for Breton manor houses in the former County of Penthièvre, its location in front of a steep slope creates a unique backdrop.
Preceding the main building are two agricultural buildings. To the east stands a chapel, built after the completion of the initial construction phase and later restyled in the 19th century with neo-Gothic shapes. During this period, the estate was complemented with an orangery and a gatehouse.
A long, gently sloping avenue leads to the presently unused property, extending towards the coast. It is owned by a community of heirs and is not accessible to the public.
