Villa Carlotta on Lake Como

Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo is undoubtedly one of the most visited residences in the province of Como. Apart from its prominent location on the shores of Lake Como with a view of the Bellagio peninsula and Villa Melzi, it is renowned for its art collection and, of course, its botanical garden, featuring a diverse range of plant species. Additionally, the villa had ownership ties to the Dukes of Saxe-Meiningen in the second half of the 19th century.

Construction of the three-story summer residence began as early as the late 17th century, commissioned by the Milanese Marquis Clerici. In the first half of the 18th century, the building acquired its current classicist-influenced appearance. In 1801, the villa became the property of Giovanni Battista Sommariva, the president of the Napoleonic era in northern Italy. Through his political career and accumulated wealth, Villa Carlotta received lavish art and sculpture decorations, some of which are now part of the museum.

In 1843, the villa was sold to Princess Marianne of Prussia, who gave it to her daughter Charlotte in 1850 on the occasion of her marriage to Duke George II of Saxe-Meiningen. Princess Charlotte died only five years later in 1855, thus consolidating the dedication of the name.

During the First World War, the villa was confiscated and, after many years of legal disputes, finally transferred to state ownership in 1927. Since then, the care and maintenance of the property has been the responsibility of the non-profit association "L'Ente Villa Carlotta".

Ernest, the son of George II's second marriage, helped design the murals on the upper floor, which take up themes of classical mythology.
