Sonnenburg Manor, Brandenburg
Sonnenburg 6, 16259 Sonnenburg
The village Sonnenburg is located in the district Märkisch-Oderland between Bad Freienwalde and Wriezen. The Sonnenberg manor with its farm buildings was built in the early 19th century. The two-story manor house is a neoclassical style building. It consists of a two-story main part with a bell tower and two short side wings. Shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, Albert Speer was commissioned to rebuild the area. For this purpose, a bunker was also built on the estate. When the bunker was blown up after 1945, the manor house was damaged and then rebuilt in a simple form, which is why today the facade is somewhat plain and unadorned. Until the early 1990s, the manor and its outbuildings were intrigued in the use of the LPG, which was founded in Sonnenburg in the early 1950s.
For more than three decades, the idyllically situated country estate seemed like an enchanted place, the outbuildings partially collapsed, the manor house uninhabited and hidden behind tall shrubs, the park heavily overgrown. In 2020, the property was open to the public for the first time during the German Heritage Day and is now slowly coming back to life. One wing of the manor house is already inhabited, the main part is scaffolded and under renovation. The dilapidated outbuildings are also to be rebuilt as soon as possible with the support of an investor, as the owner announced in an article in the Märkische Oderzeitung newspaper.
