Palace in Oporów near Kutno
Zamek w Oporowie, Oporów
Retransfer of historic properties expropriated by land reform remains a controversial issue
Oporów is located between Kutno and Żychlin. The manor located there is a gothic moated castle from the middle of the 15th century, built for Archbishop Władysław of Oporów. It has been only slightly changed over the centuries and today presents itself in well-kept historical garb. The park, which covers more than 10 hectares, was built at the beginning of the 19th century. Characteristic is the flight of steps south of the moat, flanked by two statues of stately lions. The castle is a popular location for weddings and cultural events. As early as the 1950s, a museum was established, which still exists today. It has been extensively researched throughout its history and is one of the oldest and best preserved castles in the region.
Currently, the castle in Oporów is in municipal administration. In 2014, several descendants of the last owners requested the return of the property. This request was initially granted by the Ministry of Agriculture. The county, which developed the castle complex over many years and maintains it to this day, challenged this decision. A lawsuit filed was rejected by the state administrative court, but the district continues to fight the privatization of the cultural monument.
The castle ultimately remains in the possession of the district, as the family did not want to fulfill the maintenance of public use in the event of a takeover.
