Kuyavia-Pomerania: A History Spanning Over a Thousand Years and a Young Castle

In Poland's diverse cultural landscape, rural residences of remarkable significance are tucked away.

Nestled between the Krajeński Landscape Park and the Tuchola Forest (Bory Tucholskie) lies the remarkable Komierowski Family Palace. This family bears the Pomeranian coat of arms Pomian and can trace its history back to the year 965.

Sobiesław Bossuta, an ancestor of the family, was rewarded for his services as part of the retinue of the Slavic Prince Mieszko I with vast lands stretching from the northeast of Poznań to the present-day city of Bydgoszcz. Since then, the Komierowski family has continuously operated in the region and managed several estates, with the one in Komierowo becoming their main residence.

In the 18th century, the family split into Masovian and Pomeranian branches. They were known for their patriotic resistance against Prussian troops and produced numerous personalities over the centuries. Among them were not only estate owners but also high-ranking officials, priests, lawyers, diplomats, as well as poets and thinkers.

A CASTLE AND THREE MANOR HOUSES
In 1680, Piotr Komierowski erected the first baroque manor on the remains of a destroyed predecessor, which stood in that form until the end of the 19th century. From 1895, Roman von Komierowski, landowner, jurist, and later a member of the German Reichstag, transformed this baroque manor into a neo-Gothic residence with terraces and a tower extension. A gallery from that period is visible in today's hotel.

It was not until 1923 to 1924 that today's palace was built as a "bridal gift" following the marriage of the last owner, Tomasz Komierowski, to Róża Zamoyska. This impressive construction distinctly reflects the Polish manor house style (Styl dworkowy) of that time, predominantly embracing classicist and baroque forms. The architectural period is also evident in the sloping side risalits, a stylistic feature that can be seen in many larger Mazovian profane buildings of the interwar period. The manor's centerpiece is the imposing staircase with an atrium and gallery.

According to historical records, Komierowo remained in the family's possession until the Second World War, making it the estate that stayed in family hands for the longest uninterrupted period.

TODAY'S KOMIEROWO PALACE
In the late 1990s, descendants from the Masovian branch reacquired the property and, after a six-year restoration phase, brought it into the 21st century. Since 2018, the Pałac Komierowo Boutique Hotel has welcomed guests in a total of 23 rooms, focusing on corporate retreats, health, wellness, yoga, and sports.

Behind the palace lies a 15-hectare park with an idyllic pond landscape, designed in the tradition of Prussian gardens and largely revitalized after a severe storm in 2017.
