Old Mansion in Czerniew
Pałac w Czerniewie, Czerniew
Hidden in a field: a Polish manor from the interwar period
Czerniew is located north of the small town of Łowicz just before the voivodeship border with Mazovia. An inconspicuous dirt road that turns into a pretty chestnut avenue leads to a charming monument in the Łowicz region: Zdzisław Boski had this building erected in place of an older residential house in the mid-1920s.It is not possible to find out who designed the plans for the mansion in the literature and various online sources. However, it is highly likely that it was an unknown architect, and single projects were not uncommon during this time.
The facade design is based on Baroque and Renaissance forms and appears well-proportioned compared to other Polish representative buildings of the interwar period. The terrace at the back is supported by an arcade with an open staircase, and the remains of a balustrade can still be seen in places. The former manor park was located in the south-western direction and can be recognized only in small fragments. The manor is surrounded by extensive agricultural land.
The representative brick driveway on the courtyard side was equipped with typical concrete slabs in PGR times. The interiors are plain and smoothly plastered with recognizable alterations that were apparently carried out after 1945. The entrance hall still gives a clear indication of its former stately character: an acard supported by four Tuscan columns, in the center of which a discreet wooden staircase leads to the upper floor.
Although quite close to country road no. 584, this place still reveals a special atmosphere and seems a bit isolated from the rest of the world. Perhaps it is also because the next residential building and September are still far away. Then it should be over, when the harvest begins in the surrounding fields.
