Wojnowice Palace – A Historic Treasure of Silesia

Encircled by a sprawling 4.5-hectare park, Wojnowice Palace – formerly known as “Schloss Woinowitz” – is an architectural gem of Silesia. The estate’s roots date back to its transformation in 1828, when Dr. Carl Johann Christian Kuh from Breslau, a young ophthalmologist and future industrialist, reshaped the manor into a grand residence. Later, in the late 19th century, it was meticulously renovated by Heinrich Friedrich August von Banck, a decorated officer, further adding to its stature and beauty. The palace remained in the von Banck family’s care until 1945 and has preserved much of its historical character.

The Palace:

Situated in the charming Wojnowice village in the Silesian Voivodeship, about 5 km from Racibórz, the palace’s neo-classical and neo-baroque facades reflect the splendor of 19th-century Silesia. Originally a guesthouse and museum, it resumed its role as a private residence in 2018, making it a sanctuary of tranquility amidst scenic landscapes and is currently not open to the public.

Park Surroundings:

Encased by a brick wall and adorned with wrought-iron gates, the 4.5-hectare park boasts a rich variety of flora, from massive red beeches to exotic chestnut varieties, including the rare Caucasian wingnut. Added recently is a spacious enclosure housing fallow deer and heather sheep, expanding the park’s natural allure. Wildlife, from tawny owls to vibrant frogs, thrives here, especially in spring when nightingale songs mix with the lively chorus from the pond.

Museum of the Old Village:

Founded by the estate’s owner with community contributions, the Muzeum Dawnej Wsi celebrated Silesian rural heritage. Items like a 200-year-old pea mortar, antique bread baskets, and butter molds were carefully curated, primarily donated by local families. A plaque honors over 120 donors whose treasures enriched the museum, a hub of education and nostalgia that welcomed visitors until 2018.
