The town of Freyburg belonged to the territory of the Landgraves of Thuringia, was first documented in 1203, and received city rights in 1261. Today, the municipality of Freyburg has nearly 4,600 inhabitants.
 

Freyburg was the first city in Germany to have a three-dimensional city and landscape plan created. It has a more than 1000-year history of winegrowing and has been a state-recognized spa resort since December 1989.

The 176-kilometer-long Unstrut Cycle Path and the Ecumenical Pilgrim Path from Görlitz to Vacha run through the city. A lock allows waterway travelers to bypass the Unstrut weir in Freyburg. The annual wine festival held in September is a highlight of the wine culture, drawing numerous tourists to the city.
