The early medieval castle Castello di Castelleone is located on a hill in the municipality of Deruta near Perugia, in the Castelleone district. This property is a historical, artistic and architectural monument from the 12th, 16th, and 19th centuries, which is under special protection in the Umbria region.
The complex covers a total area of 2,000 square meters and an additional 500 square meters of attic space with nearly 100 rooms. The accompanying land encompasses approximately 8,500 square meters, mostly planted with old tall trees (oaks and holm oaks) and terraced gardens that slope down to the pool. The pool, called "Piscina delle Quattro Stagioni" (Pool of the Four Seasons), is located at the foot of the castle walls and is of the "skimmer" type with a rectangular shape and one of the short sides in the shape of a crescent moon with a Roman staircase. The pool has a length of 12.5 meters and a width of 6 meters, and it features an 8-square-meter thermal whirlpool with Jacuzzi, aromatherapy, and chromotherapy. Next to the pool, there is an old stone and antique brick well. The inner cloister, surrounded by an elegant L-shaped arcade, is located in the part of the building that faces northwest, with another functional old cistern well in the middle.
Castello di Castelleone essentially represents three historical eras:
THE MIDDLE AGES
12th century. This era is characterized by massive stone walls over 2.5 meters thick and the impressive 36-meter-high Lombard tower. The square tower spans five floors.
RENAISSANCE
The 15th and 16th centuries form the main part of the castle, with the round main tower, also known as the "Torre degli Sposi" (Tower of the Newlyweds), and the chapel.
NEO-GOTHIC
During the era of Historicism, renovations were made in the neo-Gothic style, which is externally recognizable, for example, in the Belvedere tower and the part with pink plastered exterior walls.
Inside the castle, there are 7 suites (14 beds + 7 additional beds for children up to 14 years old), 7 double rooms (14 beds + 7 additional beds for children up to 14 years old), 1 single room (1 bed), and an apartment for 4 people (4 beds). A total of 33 beds for adults and 14 beds for children up to 14 years old. All suites and rooms feature modern bathrooms with whirlpool tubs or showers, steam baths, aromatherapy, and chromotherapy. In addition, there are 3 fully equipped kitchens in various sizes.
With the Castello di Castelleone, you acquire an unique Umbrian heritage property. The castle is in excellent condition and has been meticulously restored and maintained over several years by the descendants of the Morsiani family. The interior decorations and furnishings attest to the extraordinary value of a feudal residence of the highest rank.
