Catalonia: Diverse Historical Cultural Landscape

Catalonia, the autonomous community in the far northeastern part of Spain, with its own language (Catalan, which is even spoken in schools), is uniquely characterized by the impressive Pyrenees and the rugged Costa Brava. Here, you will also find one of Spain’s most famous and visited landmarks, the Sagrada Família. This basilica in the capital, Barcelona, is a masterpiece of sacred architecture designed by the visionary Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. To the south, the Costa Dorada with its popular golden sandy beaches follows. In contrast to this bustling and developed coastal area, the Catalan hinterland offers a traditional, rural atmosphere. The emblem of Catalonia, the Montserrat Abbey, is also located here in the eponymous natural park on a mountain ridge with a magnificent view.
